Mumbai Airport Runways to Close for Six Hours on November 19

Mumbai airport will shut both its runways for six hours on November 19 for annual post-monsoon maintenance, with operations on runways 09/27 and 14/32 suspended between 11 am and 5 pm IST, Mumbai International Airport Limited said.

The closure at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is part of the airport’s scheduled maintenance programme. Mumbai International Airport Limited, which operates the airport, said the work is intended to support runway safety, reliability and compliance with global aviation standards.

The maintenance will include detailed inspections, surface repairs and technical assessments of runway lighting, markings and drainage systems. The airport operator described the work as part of its year-round operational readiness programme, with the post-monsoon period used for checks and repairs after seasonal weather conditions.

MIAL said a Notice to Airmen, or NOTAM, had been issued in advance to inform airlines and other aviation stakeholders. The notice allows carriers to adjust flight schedules and manpower planning around the six-hour period when both runways will be non-operational.

According to the airport operator, coordination with airlines and relevant stakeholders began six months before the scheduled maintenance. The advance planning is intended to synchronise operational requirements and minimise inconvenience for passengers. The supplied information does not specify whether individual flights will be cancelled, rescheduled or diverted during the closure.

The two runways form part of CSMIA’s cross-runway configuration. The airport operator describes the facility as the world’s busiest single-runway airport, handling nearly 1,000 air traffic movements daily. Its infrastructure is spread across 1,900 acres and the airport has a history spanning more than 90 years.

The planned closure also has implications beyond passenger travel. CSMIA serves as an export-import and logistics hub, while its air cargo terminal handles more than 0.85 million metric tonnes of cargo annually, according to the information supplied by the airport operator. The airport handled 55.29 million passengers in the 2025-26 financial year.

MIAL is a joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings Limited and the Airports Authority of India. Adani Airport Holdings holds a 74 per cent stake and is a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited. MIAL is responsible for operating and modernising CSMIA.

The airport operator said the maintenance reflects its focus on safe, secure and efficient airside operations. Airlines and passengers are expected to use the advance operational information while planning travel around the November 19 closure window.
