Bengaluru’s traffic congestion, particularly on the route to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), is set to ease significantly with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) planning a new flyover near the critical Sadahalli Junction. The proposed flyover will provide seamless travel for the heavy traffic flow of vehicles heading to the airport via Hebbal, a route which sees nearly 80% of airport-bound passengers. With over 750 flights per day and more than 100,000 daily passengers using the airport, this flyover project promises to bring much-needed relief to commuters.
Currently, the 13-kilometre-long flyover from Hebbal’s Esteem Mall to Yelahanka Air Base ensures a signal-free stretch for vehicles headed to the airport. However, the traffic bottleneck at Sadahalli Junction, exacerbated by delays at the toll plaza and traffic signals, has remained a significant issue. The congestion here causes long delays and inconvenience to the approximately 2 lakh vehicles that use the route daily. The new flyover at Sadahalli Junction is a strategic solution to alleviate this strain, creating a smoother experience for commuters and improving overall travel time.
In addition to this project, the NHAI is exploring the possibility of constructing flyovers at key signals along the route, including at Kodigehalli, Byatarayanapura, Jakkur, and Allalasandra. This would further streamline traffic flow, ensuring a completely signal-free journey from Hebbal to the airport. Such initiatives underscore the growing importance of robust infrastructure to support Bengaluru’s rapidly expanding transportation needs, reflecting the city’s commitment to modernising urban infrastructure for the convenience of its residents and visitors.
Sustainability plays a critical role in this development. Reduced travel times and smoother traffic flow will not only alleviate the daily stress faced by commuters but also reduce fuel consumption and emissions. By improving the efficiency of the transport network, the NHAI is contributing to the city’s broader sustainability goals, ensuring that urban development aligns with environmental priorities. This flyover is a step forward in creating a more connected and sustainable Bengaluru, fostering both economic growth and improved quality of life for its residents.
