Gurugram Uber Driver Arrested After Woman Reports Threats

Gurugram police have arrested an Uber driver accused of abusing a woman and threatening to kill her after she refused to pay more than the fare shown on her booking. The arrest followed a post by the woman on X and a police investigation that identified the driver through technical checks.

The accused has been identified as Yasir, 26, a resident of Ghasera village in Nuh district. Police said he was operating on the Uber platform using an account registered in the name of Jameel Zahid Khan. The use of another person’s name is among the issues being examined in the investigation.

According to the police account reported by Jagran, the woman alleged that the driver demanded an amount above the fare displayed for the trip. When she refused to pay the additional money, he allegedly misbehaved with her and threatened her with serious harm. The report does not identify the woman.

The post came to the attention of Gurugram Police through its social media monitoring system. Officers then attempted to contact the woman, registered a first information report and began tracing the driver. Police said technical investigation helped establish his identity within a few hours.

A joint team from Palam Vihar police station and the Crime Branch Sector 39 carried out the arrest. The accused is being questioned, and investigators are examining why the account was created under a different name, along with other aspects of the case. The police have not stated in the supplied report whether the driver’s platform access had been suspended.

The case places attention on the safety systems surrounding app-based taxi services, where passengers depend on digital booking records and driver identification to assess who is operating a vehicle. In this instance, police said the driver was using an account that did not match his identity, although the report does not establish how the account was created or whether the platform had previously flagged it.

The arrest also shows how social media complaints can enter the formal policing process when they concern an immediate passenger-safety allegation. Gurugram Police acted after its monitoring team located the woman’s post, contacted her and registered a case. Further action will depend on the investigation and the evidence gathered by the police.
