Tamil Nadu Rain Alert: New Low-Pressure Area May Form by October 29

Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal may receive moderate rain from October 28 to November 3, while Tiruvallur district could see heavy rain on November 3, according to a weather bulletin issued by the Chennai Meteorological Centre.

The bulletin said a new low-pressure area could form over the southern Andaman Sea and adjoining areas within the next 24 hours. The system is expected to develop around an atmospheric circulation currently present over the region.

The forecast follows the movement of Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Arnab, which crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coast between 2 am and 8 am on October 28, between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam. The storm moved in a north-westward direction after landfall and weakened while remaining over the central-western Bay of Bengal.

According to the meteorological centre, the system was expected to weaken further into a cyclonic storm within the following six hours. The bulletin separately identified the developing circulation over the Andaman region as the weather feature that could produce a new low-pressure area.

Tamil Nadu is expected to experience moderate rain at one or two places between October 28 and November 3. Similar conditions have been forecast for Puducherry and Karaikal. The bulletin also said that one or two places in the Western Ghats districts could receive light to moderate rain.

The specific warning for Tiruvallur is for November 3, when heavy rain is possible in the district. Tiruvallur is part of the wider Chennai metropolitan region, making the forecast relevant to the functioning of roads, local drainage systems and daily travel if rainfall becomes concentrated in urban and peri-urban areas. The bulletin, however, did not provide rainfall totals, a specific warning for Chennai city or details of any municipal advisories.

The forecast period covers a new weather system developing over the Bay of Bengal as the earlier storm weakens after crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast. Further assessments will depend on the formation and movement of the low-pressure area, along with subsequent updates from the meteorological authorities.

The Chennai Meteorological Centre’s next weather updates will determine whether the forecast for Tiruvallur and other parts of Tamil Nadu is revised, strengthened or expanded to include additional districts.
