Gurugram Street Lights: Civic Body Plans 2,480 New Units

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram is preparing to install 2,480 street lights along 19 major roads to address dark stretches linked by the civic body to road accidents and night-time difficulties for pedestrians and motorists.

A municipal official said the installation will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will cover 2,050 lights on footpaths, while the second will add 430 lights along central road medians. The civic body said the improved lighting is intended to make it easier for pedestrians to walk and for vehicles to operate after dark.

Lighting work on the footpath along Medanta Road has already been completed, according to the report. The project will also cover the route from Huda City Centre to Signature Chowk, Golf Course Extension Road and Bakhtawar Singh Chowk, as well as the stretch between Bakhtawar Singh Chowk and the Medanta traffic signal.

Other footpath corridors included in the plan are the route from Hero Honda Chowk to Bakhtawar Singh Chowk, the road connecting Mayfield Garden with the Southern Peripheral Road, the stretch from Park Hospital on Sohna Road to Mayfield Garden, and Dharam Marg. These roads connect residential areas, commercial zones, hospitals and major junctions, making lighting an important part of their night-time functioning.

The second phase will focus on central medians along several sector-dividing roads. These include Sector 45-46, 45-53, 51-52-57, 53-56, 44-52, 51-52, 45-48, Gurugram University Road and 51-46. The municipal corporation has not provided an installation completion date in the information available.

The project also highlights the split responsibility involved in making urban roads usable after dark. Footpath lighting serves pedestrians directly, while median lighting improves visibility for vehicles and junction movements. However, the announcement covers the installation of lights and does not specify details about power supply, maintenance arrangements, brightness standards, outage response or the expected cost of the project.

The municipal corporation has asked residents to report other roads where lighting remains seriously inadequate, particularly stretches not included in the first phase. Suggestions received from citizens will be considered for possible inclusion in the second phase. The civic body has not specified the channel or deadline for submitting these locations.

The announcement comes as Gurugram continues to expand across a network of sector roads, arterial corridors and peripheral connections where pedestrian movement often overlaps with fast-moving traffic. For the current project, the next step is the phased installation of the identified footpath and median lights, alongside the corporation’s review of additional locations suggested by residents.
