Nanjangud Stadium Works Begin, But Project Cost Figures Conflict

Development works at the Nanjangud taluk stadium in Mysuru district have been launched, with a proposed 400-metre athletics track, drainage, a main hall, high-mast lighting, renovated toilets, and boundary infrastructure. However, the funding figures reported for the project do not match the costs of the individual works listed in the announcement.

According to a report by Prajavani – Mysuru, MLA Darshan Dhruvanarayana said the works were intended to develop the stadium comprehensively and improve facilities for athletes. The foundation stone was laid at the Junior College ground in Nanjangud on Sunday.

The report attributed the release of funds to the state government during Siddaramaiah’s tenure as chief minister. It said the sports minister had released ₹1.50 lakh for stadium development in the Nanjangud constituency after visiting the taluk stadium. The report did not specify whether this amount referred to the full project cost, an initial instalment, or a separate component of the works.

The works listed in the report include drainage around the stadium and construction of a 400-metre athletics track. A main hall is expected to be built at a cost of ₹33.34 lakh, while high-mast lights are listed at ₹16.5 lakh. Toilet renovation is estimated at ₹6.60 lakh. The project also includes construction of the main entrance gate and a compound wall, although separate costs for those elements were not provided.

The itemised costs for the main hall, high-mast lights and toilet renovation alone add up to ₹56.44 lakh. This is substantially higher than the ₹1.50 lakh funding figure cited elsewhere in the report, even before the athletics track, drainage, entrance gate and compound wall are included. The discrepancy means the total sanctioned amount, funding source, and scope of the current works cannot be established from the available material.

Dhruvanarayana said students should give importance to sports activities alongside academic subjects. The announcement places the stadium within a wider public-infrastructure function: providing local access to athletics, organised sport, lighting, sanitation and basic site infrastructure without requiring students and athletes to travel to larger urban centres.

Former MLA Kalale Keshavamurthy, KPCC general secretary S.C. Basavaraju, Nanjangud City Congress president C.M. Shankar and other local representatives were reported to be present at the foundation-stone ceremony. The source did not provide a completion timeline, tender details, executing agency, contractor information or a schedule for making the upgraded facilities available to users.

Before the project is reported as fully costed, the responsible sports department or local authority will need to clarify whether the ₹1.50 lakh figure is a typographical error, an initial release, or funding for a limited part of the work. The approved project estimate and implementation timeline were not available in the supplied report.
