Tamil Nadu School Holiday Declared as Heavy Rain Floods Coimbatore

Tamil Nadu school holiday announcements have been made for October 26 in Coimbatore and Dindigul districts as heavy rain linked to a Bay of Bengal weather system disrupts normal life across the state. Schools in Puducherry and Karaikal will also remain closed, while colleges in the two Union Territory regions have been included in the shutdown.

According to a report by Dinamalar, district collectors in Coimbatore and Dindigul announced a holiday for schools as a precautionary measure. The decision comes amid intensified rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with the India Meteorological Department warning of heavy to extremely heavy rain in parts of the region.

Coimbatore has reported disruption in several important urban areas. The report said key parts of the city were affected by flooding, with underground passages submerged and motorists facing difficulty while travelling through waterlogged stretches. Such conditions can interrupt road movement, delay emergency response and create additional risks for residents using low-lying transport links.

The rainfall has been associated with a weather system that formed over the Bay of Bengal and strengthened, according to the report. The northeast monsoon has also intensified, bringing continuous rain to several districts. The combined weather conditions have affected routine activities and disrupted normal public movement.

The school closures in Coimbatore and Dindigul were announced by the respective district administrations rather than as a statewide order. This allows local authorities to respond to conditions on the ground, particularly where flooding, waterlogging or unsafe travel may affect students and school staff. The report did not state that all educational institutions across Tamil Nadu would be closed.

In Puducherry and Karaikal, Education Minister A. Namassivayam announced that both schools and colleges would remain closed on October 26. The measure covers the two administrative regions and is separate from the school-only closures announced in Coimbatore and Dindigul.

The weather-related disruption highlights the direct connection between rainfall intensity and the functioning of urban infrastructure. Submerged underpasses and flooded roads can quickly turn a weather warning into a mobility and public-safety problem, especially for school transport, two-wheeler users and residents travelling through low-lying parts of cities.

The closures will take effect on October 26, with the district administrations and the Puducherry authorities expected to continue responding to local rainfall and flooding conditions. Further decisions on educational institutions will depend on official announcements from the concerned administrations.
