Three members of a family, including an elderly couple, were rescued after a portion of their house collapsed in Kancheepuram following continuous heavy rain, police said. The incident took place on Thumbavanam Street on Thursday evening, after several days of rainfall reportedly weakened the structure.
The victims were identified as Muralidharan, 65, his wife Kausalya, 61, and their son Deenadayalan, 38. They were trapped under debris when a section of the house wall suddenly gave way, according to police.
Fire and rescue services personnel reached the site after the collapse and began clearing the debris. The team used specialised equipment to remove the fallen material and safely bring all three family members out of the damaged structure.
The collapse occurred after heavy rain had continued in the area for several days. Police said the rainfall had reportedly weakened the house, although the supplied report does not provide details about the building’s age, construction condition or whether any prior warning had been issued to the occupants.
The incident highlights the immediate risk that prolonged rainfall can create for vulnerable residential structures, particularly where walls or other components have already been weakened. In this case, the collapse was limited to a portion of the house wall, but the debris was enough to trap three occupants inside.
The rescue operation concluded after personnel cleared the debris and brought the family members to safety. Police and fire and rescue services have not, in the supplied report, announced further details about the structural assessment of the house or any subsequent action concerning the damaged property.
