A lawyer who practises at Barasat court was arrested after allegedly assaulting and abusing an on-duty traffic police sub-inspector who tried to stop a car near Barrackpore station in North 24 Parganas, police said. The incident reportedly took place on Thursday night under the Titagarh police station area.
According to police, the car was seen moving through the area after hitting vehicles or other objects at several points along the road. Rajeshchandra Ray, a sub-inspector with the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate’s traffic department, went to stop the vehicle to prevent a possible accident and protect pedestrians and other road users.
Police said the officer managed to stop the car and then found that its driver appeared to be intoxicated. When the officer tried to speak to him, the driver allegedly got out of the vehicle and began behaving abusively. He is accused of verbally abusing the officer and attempting to assault him.
Other police personnel arrived at the scene shortly afterwards. The man was detained and taken to Titagarh police station. Police identified him as Pallab Kar and said he was initially known to be a lawyer practising at Barasat court.
Following the confrontation, Ray reportedly felt unwell and was taken by colleagues to B N Bose Hospital in Barrackpore for treatment. Police said the officer received medical attention there. The report did not provide details of the officer’s injuries or the duration of his treatment.
An investigating officer at Titagarh police station said the accused had been arrested on allegations of attacking an on-duty sub-inspector. The officer also said that Kar was produced before the Barrackpore subdivisional court on Friday.
The allegations relate to two linked public-safety concerns: the police account that the vehicle was being driven after repeatedly hitting objects on the road, and the alleged assault on the officer who intervened. The supplied report does not state whether any pedestrian or other member of the public was injured in the reported driving incident, nor does it specify the vehicle’s registration details.
The case also places the role of traffic personnel in focus. Officers are required to intervene when vehicle movements present an immediate risk to road users, but the report indicates that the intervention escalated into a confrontation before additional police personnel arrived. The police account remains the basis of the reported arrest, and the allegations have not been tested in court.
No response from Kar or his family was available when the report was published. The next steps in the case will depend on the court proceedings and the investigation by Titagarh police. Police have not disclosed further details about the charges or any forensic or medical findings related to the incident.
