A 71-year-old retired government employee died after his scooter allegedly skidded on Delhi’s Ring Road in South Extension and he was run over by a truck, police said. The truck driver has been arrested and the vehicle seized as investigators examine the sequence of events.
The accident occurred around noon on Thursday in front of a restaurant in South Extension Part-II. The deceased was identified as Lal Dev Shah, who was riding his scooter when he allegedly lost control and fell onto the road. A passing truck then ran over him, leaving him critically injured, according to the police account reported by the Times of India.
Police were informed about the crash and a team reached the site. Shah was taken for medical assistance but could not be saved. His body was subsequently sent for the required legal formalities.
A case has been registered at Kotla Mubarakpur police station under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Section 281 relates to rash driving or riding on a public way, while Section 106(1) concerns causing death by negligence.
The truck driver was identified as 46-year-old Brijlal Yadav, who was arrested in connection with the case. Police have seized the truck allegedly involved in the crash for further analysis. Investigators are examining how the scooter skidded and the circumstances in which the truck ran over the rider.
The crash took place on a busy stretch of Ring Road that carries a steady flow of vehicles through the day and experiences considerable traffic during peak hours as commuters travel between different parts of Delhi. Police are expected to examine available evidence from the accident site to establish the exact cause of the collision.
The incident comes against a backdrop of other fatal road crashes involving heavy vehicles reported in Delhi in recent months. In September, four people installing CCTV cameras for Delhi Traffic Police were killed and two others injured when a dumper truck collided with a stationary crane and a parked autorickshaw in Sarita Vihar. In August, a 53-year-old woman died after being hit by a dumper truck in Nehru Place. Earlier, in May, three people, including a six-year-old girl, were killed and four others seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash in outer Delhi’s Alipur, where a dumper truck allegedly rammed into a shared autorickshaw.
Police are continuing their investigation into the South Extension crash, including the evidence collected from the site and the vehicle seized in the case.
