SG Highway Bridge Nears Opening After 2.3-Year Build

Ahmedabad’s new SG Highway bridge between Karnavati and the Sarkhej-Sanand junction has completed its main construction work and could open to traffic by the end of October, according to National Highway officials cited by Gujarat Samachar. Cleaning and finishing work is underway, while the formal inauguration date has not yet been announced.

The six-lane bridge stretches for 4.3 kilometres along one of Ahmedabad’s busiest traffic corridors. The project has taken two years and three months to reach completion. Officials said the upper bridge is now substantially ready, with lighting, noise barriers and thermoplastic road markings completed or being finalised.

The bridge has six ramps in total. Three ramps allow vehicles travelling from the Sarkhej-Sanand junction to climb towards the Iskcon side, while three others serve traffic moving in the opposite direction. These ramps are intended to connect the elevated structure with the existing SG Highway movement pattern.

A National Highway official told the publication that cleaning work on the bridge was expected to be completed within three to four days. The official said the structure could technically be opened for traffic once the upper section was cleared, although minor work would continue on the roads below. Lighting on the bridge has already been switched on, while road furniture and related finishing work are being completed.

The opening schedule remains subject to a decision by senior authorities. The official said discussions were still taking place over who would inaugurate the bridge and when the ceremony would be held. The project has been linked to an expected opening around Diwali, but no final public date was provided in the report.

The Ahmedabad Police Commissioner had earlier directed that the bridge work be completed by October 31. The commissioner told Gujarat Samachar Digital that police officials had reviewed the city’s bridges, potholes and road conditions and had met National Highway representatives regarding the project. The commissioner also instructed authorities to repair the roads beneath the bridge before the elevated section opened to traffic.

According to the National Highway official cited in the report, the upper bridge could be opened by October 30 if required, with remaining minor works such as lighting checks, table checking, thermoplastic painting and road-furniture work being completed around that timeline. The official also said the roads below the bridge would continue to receive repairs before traffic is allowed onto the structure.

The bridge is expected by officials to reduce travel time and fuel consumption for motorists using the Karnavati-Sarkhej route. Its operational impact will depend on how traffic is distributed between the elevated carriageway, ramps and roads below. The next confirmed milestone is the completion of finishing and cleaning work, followed by an official decision on the inauguration and opening date.
