Haryana Power Crisis Leaves Gurugram, Faridabad in Blackout

The Haryana power crisis has disrupted electricity supply across 23 districts, leaving an estimated eight to 10 lakh homes without power and affecting businesses, schools, water supply and internet connectivity in Gurugram, Faridabad, Palwal, Rewari and other parts of the state. The disruption followed a strike by around 40,000 electricity employees protesting against privatisation, according to a report by Live Hindustan.

The impact has been particularly severe in southern Haryana. Around half of Gurugram and about 50 villages in and around the city were reported to be facing blackout-like conditions. In Rajendra Park, residents blocked Railway Road after prolonged power cuts and raised slogans against officials of the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN). Police reached the site and reopened the road after roughly an hour following an argument with protesters.

Faridabad has also reported extensive outages since Wednesday night. The disruption affected around half of the district, with demonstrations and road blockades reported at Lakhani Chowk, Saran Chowk, Ballabhgarh-Tigaon Road, Parvati Colony, Pyali Chowk and outside a power office. Residents also gathered near substations in Sector 2, Ajronda, NIT-5, Palla and Kheri Gujaran. In Jharsentli village, protesters blocked the National Highway, while residents in NIT-3 blocked traffic near Masjid Chowk.

The outages have affected essential household services. Water pumps and inverters stopped functioning in several areas, while water supply was reported to have halted in localities without electricity. Internet connectivity was also disrupted in homes. More than 10 schools in Faridabad reportedly declared a holiday after power supply remained interrupted for over 24 hours. School managements informed parents through mobile messages that normal academic activities would not be possible.

The disruption has also affected industry and commercial activity. The report said production at several industries in Faridabad fell by around 50 per cent. About 2,500 complaints were received at the district electricity control room, although they could not be resolved immediately. Around 50 feeders were reported to be out of service, affecting residential areas, markets and industrial zones.

DHBVN data cited in the report showed that 28 11-kilovolt feeders and one 33-kilovolt substation were out of service in Gurugram, disrupting supply to around 50,000 homes. Faridabad had 43 11-kilovolt feeders and two 33-kilovolt substations affected. Palwal reported 30 11-kilovolt feeders and three 33-kilovolt substations out of service, while 22 feeders were affected in Rewari. In Narnaul, 40 33-kilovolt substations and 21 11-kilovolt feeders were reported to be shut.

The report said a single feeder generally supplies electricity to between 1,500 and 2,000 homes, indicating the scale of the disruption in affected urban and peri-urban areas. Police were deployed near several substations amid protests and concerns over possible confrontations.

DHBVN’s managing director was sending hourly updates on affected feeders and substations to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Power Minister Anil Vij. The reports were intended to track the impact of the strike and the status of electricity infrastructure across southern Haryana.
