Telangana has directed its energy authorities to raise daily thermal power generation to 140 million units (MU) from the current peak of 118 MU, as electricity demand is expected to increase during the rabi and summer seasons and hydel generation remains lower.
Deputy Chief Minister and energy portfolio holder Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka issued the direction at a review meeting at the Secretariat, asking officials to operate all thermal power units at maximum capacity and improve their Plant Load Factor (PLF). Officials were also told to monitor generation every day to maintain supply for agricultural and domestic consumers.
The state’s average daily thermal power generation is currently about 91 MU, according to officials. Generation reached 118 MU on a recent day, prompting the government to seek a further increase in output. Telangana Generation Corporation (TGenco) plants generated an average of 65.9 MU during 2024-25, while the average had risen to 90.97 MU as of October 21 in the current financial year.
Coal availability will be a key operational requirement for the higher generation target. An alternative coal supply arrangement has been made with Coal India Limited to ensure uninterrupted operation of two units at the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant from November, according to the report.
Yadadri already has four 800-MW units generating electricity. The fifth unit was synchronised with the grid on October 20. Officials are addressing the remaining technical and operational issues before the unit begins full commercial operations. The addition of the fifth unit is expected to strengthen the state’s thermal generation capacity once it becomes commercially operational.
The government’s instructions also cover the financial pressures within the power sector. Bhatti asked officials to prepare proposals for a One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme that would allow closed industries to clear pending electricity dues. TGSPDCL and TGNPDCL were directed to coordinate with eligible industries and explain the applicable rules and settlement options.
Bhatti further instructed the finance department to recover outstanding dues owed by government departments to Singareni Collieries Company Limited, TGenco, Transco and other power-sector organisations. The direction links electricity availability with payment flows across the state’s energy institutions, although the government has not announced the size of the outstanding dues or the proposed OTS terms.
Energy special chief secretary Naveen Mittal and senior officials from TGenco, Transco, the state power distribution companies and RPDCL attended the meeting. The government said the departments would coordinate to maintain uninterrupted electricity supply across Telangana as demand rises in the coming seasons.
