Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has announced that the state government will examine the Mudiraj community’s demand to move from the BC-D category to BC-A, a change that could affect access to reserved opportunities in education and government employment. The issue will be discussed at the next Cabinet meeting before a Cabinet sub-committee is constituted to study the proposed reclassification.
Reddy made the announcement during celebrations marking the birth anniversary of Panduga Sayanna Mudiraj at Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad on Thursday. He said the sub-committee would examine the matter comprehensively and consider concerns and doubts raised by other communities before taking the process forward.
The Chief Minister said the community had not been reclassified earlier because of a lack of accurate data. He linked the proposed review to the caste census conducted by the Telangana government during 2024-25, asking communities to submit complete details and report errors in their population figures for correction.
According to Reddy, the caste census has given communities stronger evidence to support their demands. He said Telangana had undertaken a comprehensive caste census after nearly a century, recalling that the first such exercise had taken place during British rule.
The proposed process follows the SC sub-categorisation completed by the Congress government, which Reddy cited as a model for examining the Mudiraj community’s request. The government has not yet announced the composition of the Cabinet sub-committee, the timetable for its report or the legal steps that would follow any recommendation to alter the community’s classification.
The Mudiraj community is currently listed under the BC-D category in Telangana. A move to BC-A would have implications for the distribution of opportunities within the state’s backward-class reservation framework. The Chief Minister said the review would take into account the concerns of other communities, indicating that the government plans to rely on population data and a comparative assessment before deciding on the request.
Reddy also spoke about political representation for the community, saying it was his responsibility to ensure that Mudirajs became partners in governance. He asked BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar to discuss the issue with Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president B Mahesh Kumar Goud and explore the possibility of offering an MLC ticket to a Mudiraj community leader.
The Chief Minister said the Mudiraj community had a significant presence in his Kodangal Assembly constituency. He referred to his association with community leaders and cited the appointment of Srihari Mudiraj as a District Congress Committee president, followed by his selection as a party candidate and induction into the Cabinet. He also referred to Congress fielding Neelam Madhu in the Lok Sabha elections.
During the event, Reddy paid tributes to Panduga Sayanna, Chakali Ailamma and Doddi Komaraiah, as well as singer Gaddar and poet Ande Sri. He announced that statues of Panduga Sayanna and Doddi Komaraiah would be installed on Tank Bund in Hyderabad. The next formal step on the BC-A demand is its consideration at the state Cabinet meeting, followed by the proposed constitution of the Cabinet sub-committee.
