Hyderabad’s ₹576 Crore Nala Development to Transform City

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched an ambitious initiative to enhance stormwater drainage systems across the city under the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure (H-CITI) project. With an investment of ₹576 crore, the project aims to address critical flooding issues, improve drainage, and protect the city from the adverse impacts of heavy rainfall. Over 40 works are underway, with more projects expected to be launched in the coming months, strategically covering several zones across the city.

In the Charminar Zone alone, 13 major works are set to be undertaken with an investment of ₹154 crore, focusing on flood-prone areas that have long struggled with inadequate drainage. Similarly, ₹131 crore has been allocated for seven works in LB Nagar Zone, aimed at alleviating flooding risks in the region. Other zones such as Serilingampally, Kukatpally, and Khairatabad will also benefit from new stormwater infrastructure, with works planned for critical areas like Durgam Cheruvu, Moin Cheruvu, and Osmania General Hospital.

The GHMC’s proposal to spend ₹2,141 crore on internal works within its limits and an additional ₹2,993 crore for areas outside the Outer Ring Road underscores the scale of the project. The second phase of this initiative covers 148 works within the GHMC, stretching over 176 kilometres, while 267 works will be carried out in municipalities on the city’s outskirts, covering more than 275 kilometres of drains. These extensive efforts aim to reduce flooding, ensure smoother urban living, and boost the city’s resilience against climate change.

From a sustainability perspective, these development works have significant implications. By upgrading stormwater systems, Hyderabad is not only preventing flood-related damage but also enhancing its urban drainage system to better manage the monsoon season. Improved drainage will mitigate the environmental impact of stagnant water, reduce soil erosion, and foster a healthier urban ecosystem. In terms of civic issues, the H-CITI initiative is a much-needed intervention that will directly benefit thousands of residents by providing safer, flood-free zones and enhancing overall urban livability in Hyderabad.
