Central Railway Sees Decline in Misuse of Alarm Chains

The Central Railway (CR) has reported a decline in the number of alarm chain pulling incidents on its trains. This positive trend is attributed to increased awareness among passengers about the consequences of misuse. Between April 2023 and September 2023, there were 927 instances of alarm chain pulling on CR trains. However, in the corresponding period of 2024, the number of incidents has reduced to 823.

The railway authorities have repeatedly emphasized the importance of using the alarm chain only in genuine emergencies, such as fire, medical emergencies, or criminal activities. Misuse of the alarm chain can lead to significant delays in train operations, affecting the travel plans of thousands of passengers. To discourage misuse, the railway has implemented penalties for those who pull the alarm chain without a valid reason. Offenders can face imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of Rs 1,000, or both.

The railway authorities have also encouraged passengers to use alternative methods to seek assistance, such as approaching the train’s staff or dialing the Rail Madad helpline (139). By using these channels, passengers can avoid unnecessary delays and inconveniencing other travelers. The reduction in alarm chain pulling incidents is a positive development for the Central Railway. It reflects the growing awareness among passengers about the importance of responsible behavior and the consequences of misuse.
