Sabarimala Airport SIA Survey Completed, Community Impact Assessed

The social impact assessment (SIA) for the proposed Sabarimala Greenfield airport has successfully completed its field survey, marking a significant step towards the construction of this much-anticipated project. Spanning approximately 1,039.876 hectares across the Manimala and Erumely panchayats in Kottayam, the airport’s development is poised to bring both opportunities and challenges to local communities.

The survey, conducted by a dedicated 15-member team from the social work department of Bharat Mata College, Thirkkakkara, commenced on October 9. This independent agency took over after a previous assessment by the Centre for Management Development was halted due to a court directive. The completion of this survey is vital as it directly influences the lives of 1,441 residents and 875 plantation workers who could be affected by the land acquisition. The proposed airport will require the acquisition of 916.27 hectares from the Cheruvalli estate and an additional 121.876 hectares of private land, impacting 221 families within the estate and 362 families outside it. The survey team engaged directly with these families, collecting insights and feedback essential for the SIA. Such grassroots engagement is crucial, as it acknowledges the emotional and social dimensions of displacement, allowing local voices to shape the development narrative.

Once the draft report is finalised, it will be submitted to the district collector by November 15, followed by a public adalat, where affected families can voice their concerns and suggestions. This participatory approach underscores a commitment to transparency and community involvement, which is vital for fostering trust between the government and residents. From a sustainability perspective, the introduction of the Greenfield airport raises questions about ecological balance and community livelihoods. While proponents argue that the airport could stimulate economic growth and job creation, critics express concerns about potential environmental degradation and the loss of agricultural land. The delicate balance between development and sustainability is a central theme in this discourse, as local communities navigate the prospect of change. Public sentiment is mixed; many residents view the airport as an opportunity for economic revitalisation, while others fear it could disrupt their way of life. The potential for increased tourism and connectivity is appealing, yet the emotional toll of displacement looms large. As the process moves forward, it is essential that stakeholders prioritise both economic development and the preservation of local cultures and ecosystems.
