The New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has intensified its efforts to combat dust pollution at construction sites. With the Air Quality Index (AQI) plummeting to “poor” levels, inspections were conducted across various sites, resulting in fines of Rs 50,000 for each violation of dust mitigation measures.
The enforcement aligns with Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), addressing the urgent need for cleaner air in New Delhi. Alarmingly poor air quality index (AQI) levels have raised health concerns, with respiratory diseases on the rise. Health experts warn that long-term exposure to high pollution can lead to chronic conditions, severely affecting residents’ quality of life. Amid rampant construction activity, the NDMC’s decision to issue 30 fines totaling Rs 15 lakh serves as a crucial wake-up call for builders and contractors, emphasizing the need for accountability and action to improve air quality in the capital.
An NDMC spokesperson stated, “We have implemented rigorous inspections at construction sites to enforce dust mitigation measures, as mandated by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Our teams are dedicated to ensuring compliance, and violators will face strict penalties.” This proactive approach is bolstered by the Public Health Department’s issuance of 290 additional fines for violations related to public hygiene and waste management, signaling a comprehensive strategy to tackle the pollution crisis. The NDMC has also invested in advanced equipment, deploying six mechanical road sweepers, eight mobile anti-smog guns, and 20 water sprinklers to combat dust pollution. Stage 1 of the GRAP emphasizes controlling dust through improved waste management, regular road cleaning, and stringent checks on polluting vehicles and industrial emissions. With rising respiratory issues among residents, the NDMC’s initiatives provide hope for improved air quality. Collective efforts toward sustainability can lead to a healthier environment and better quality of life for New Delhi’s residents.
