Bengaluru Varthur Road Works Get Panel Push as Potholes Targeted

Bengaluru has formed a multi-agency panel to oversee road development works in Varthur, with officials directed to speed up land acquisition linked to Transferable Development Rights (TDR), clear pending projects and address immediate road and drainage problems.

The committee is headed by Bengaluru East City Corporation (BECC) commissioner DS Ramesh. It includes the BECC additional commissioner, the managing director of the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL), officials from Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) and the revenue department, and the deputy commissioner of police for traffic.

The panel will focus on Varthur road projects where land acquisition has been tied to TDR formalities. Officials have been asked to acquire land in cases where the TDR process has been completed and begin road development works. Where TDR cases remain pending, they have been directed to engage with landowners and help complete the formalities.

The arrangement places land acquisition, road construction, electricity-related coordination, revenue processes and traffic management within a single oversight structure. The immediate objective is to reduce delays caused by pending approvals and coordination between agencies, according to the directions reported by the Times of India.

BECC additional commissioner Lokhande Snehal Sudhakar reviewed road and flyover works, utility shifting, drainage and traffic management on Wednesday. The review covered pending works in and around Varthur, where road projects require coordination between civic agencies, utility providers, landowners and traffic authorities.

Officials were also directed to take immediate short-term measures on stretches affecting daily movement. These include filling potholes, removing construction debris and silt, repairing damaged footpaths, restoring drains and fixing damaged slabs along ITPL Main Road and in Kundalahalli Colony.

The instructions distinguish between two parallel tasks. The first is to complete the land and administrative processes required for larger road projects. The second is to address existing defects on roads and pedestrian infrastructure while those projects remain pending. The repairs ordered along ITPL Main Road and at Kundalahalli Colony are intended to deal with current problems rather than wait for the completion of broader works.

TDR-related land acquisition has become a key administrative issue for the Varthur projects because road development depends on the completion of formalities involving affected landowners. The new panel is expected to track these cases while bringing together agencies responsible for roads, utilities, revenue matters and traffic operations.

The committee’s next steps are to acquire land where TDR formalities are complete, facilitate the completion of pending cases, advance road and flyover works, coordinate utility shifting and implement the ordered repairs to potholes, drains, footpaths, slabs and construction-affected areas.
