Pune-Lonavla Rail Expansion to Receive Joint Funding

The Pune-Lonavla rail line expansion project has secured funding from both the central and state governments. Murlidhar Mohol, the Member of Parliament for Pune and Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, announced on Saturday that the project will now proceed with financial support from these two key sources, following earlier plans to include contributions from local municipal corporations.

Mohol emphasised the project’s importance, stating that it would not only increase the frequency of trains between Pune and Mumbai but also alleviate congestion on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. This expansion will see the addition of third and fourth tracks along the Pune-Lonavla corridor, enhancing overall connectivity and efficiency. He noted that recent discussions with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde have led to the state government assuming full financial responsibility for the project, alongside the central government’s commitment.

The decision to channel funds directly from both governments aims to expedite the project’s completion and improve railway services in the region. The enhancement of the Pune-Lonavla route is expected to significantly boost transportation infrastructure, reduce travel times, and support regional economic growth. With both the central and state authorities backing this initiative, stakeholders and residents alike are anticipating positive changes in connectivity and transport efficiency.
