Organisers of Ramlila, Durga Puja, Diwali melas, weddings and other events in Delhi can now receive temporary electricity connections within 24 hours of applying, according to information reported by Jagran – New Delhi. The service is intended to ensure uninterrupted power supply during the festival and event season, when diesel generator use is restricted because of air pollution concerns.
The temporary connection facility is being provided by Delhi’s electricity distribution companies, or discoms. Organisers can apply through the relevant discom office, customer care centre, website, mobile application or WhatsApp service. After the application and demand note are submitted, the discom will arrange a meter and issue the connection.
BSES has said the facility covers Ramlila performances, Durga Puja celebrations, Diwali melas, weddings and other programmes. Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited has also started the service, according to the report. The stated 24-hour timeline begins after the application and demand note requirements have been completed.
The expedited process comes as organisers face restrictions on diesel generators in Delhi because of air pollution. Temporary electricity connections therefore provide an alternative power source for event lighting and other operational requirements. The report did not specify the applicable connection charges, sanctioned load limits or the areas covered by each individual discom.
Discom teams have been placed on high alert during the festival period to respond to possible supply issues. Teams are inspecting event locations and surrounding infrastructure, including electricity poles, streetlights, towers, overhead wires, substations and feeders. These checks are intended to identify potential risks and support reliable supply during public gatherings.
Organisers have also been advised to take precautions with temporary electrical wiring. The discoms have recommended installing earth leakage circuit breakers, or ELCBs, as a safety measure. Such devices are designed to help protect people and equipment when leakage current is detected, although the report did not provide further technical guidance on installation or inspection standards.
The arrangement places responsibility on both the distribution companies and event organisers. Discoms are expected to process applications, provide meters and inspect nearby electrical infrastructure, while organisers must complete the application process and ensure that temporary wiring is installed safely. The report did not state whether applications would be prioritised according to event size, public footfall or local network capacity.
For event organisers, the immediate operational requirement is to submit applications through the available online or offline channels and complete the demand note process. The discoms’ high-alert arrangements and infrastructure inspections will continue during the festival period, while temporary connections will be issued after the required application formalities are completed.
