Chikkamagaluru Rain Revives Crops but Disrupts Power and Travel

Continuous rain across Chikkamagaluru’s Malnad region has brought relief to coffee, pepper, areca and paddy growers after a prolonged dry and hot spell, while also disrupting power supply, mobile connectivity and movement in several areas.

The rain covered Sringeri, NR Pura, Mudigere, Kalasa, Koppa and parts of Chikkamagaluru city. In low-lying areas of Kalasa and Charandi, water entered houses, according to residents cited in the report. Sringeri taluk recorded thunder and heavy rain from Sunday night, with the downpour continuing until Tuesday morning.

The weather change has eased moisture stress in plantations and paddy fields. Planters said the rain could support coffee bean development if the spell continues for a few more days. The showers also created a window for plantation work that had been delayed because of excessive heat.

Coffee planter Arun Kumar said he had been waiting for rain before applying manure to his plantation. “Due to excessive heat, manuring was delayed. I was worried about the high temperatures. The rain has provided temporary relief, and it would be even better if it continues for a few more days,” he said.

Paddy growers had faced a more immediate water shortage. Several farmers had been pumping water from streams and rivers to irrigate their fields during the dry period. Chandrashekar, a farmer from NR Pura taluk, said he had pumped water from a stream to his paddy field for the first time in nearly 50 years.

“If the dry conditions continue, it will be difficult to harvest paddy. The recent rain has helped significantly, but we need regular showers,” Chandrashekar said. His account highlights the pressure that an extended dry spell placed on local irrigation practices, even in a region known for its high rainfall and plantation economy.

The rain also affected daily life in and around Sringeri. Pilgrims in the town found it difficult to move through the rain, while power supply and mobile connectivity were affected in rural areas including Menase, Kigga, Kerekatte, Nemmaru, Begaru and Kotegodu. Balehonnur and surrounding areas also received heavy rainfall.

In some locations, the rain arrived suddenly after days of heat and overcast conditions. A spell recorded between about 7am and 10am caught residents by surprise, lowered temperatures and improved conditions for crops. However, water entering homes and interruptions to electricity and communications showed that the same rainfall brought both agricultural relief and localised disruption.

The report did not specify the extent of damage to houses, the duration of power interruptions or any official restoration timeline. Farmers and residents remain dependent on the continuation of regular showers for crop recovery and on the restoration of essential services in affected rural areas.
