Telangana Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive assessment of the El Niño impact on the state by the end of October, following a review of the situation on Tuesday. The report will assess conditions during the June–September monsoon season and will form the basis for a proposed all-party meeting.
The assessment will examine rainfall and 12 other parameters linked to the monsoon and its consequences across Telangana. Officials from the Planning, Revenue, Groundwater, Agriculture, Panchayat Raj and Rural Drinking Water Supply departments will contribute inputs, along with other departments involved in the review.
The decision places the state’s drought response within a coordinated administrative process rather than leaving the assessment to a single department. The inclusion of groundwater, agriculture and rural drinking water agencies indicates that the review will cover both water availability and its implications for farming and village-level supply systems.
The June–September monsoon period is the reference window for the report. However, the information currently available does not specify the rainfall figures, the districts likely to be classified as drought-affected, or the thresholds that will be used to evaluate the 12 parameters. Those details are expected to emerge through the comprehensive assessment.
The report is also intended to support the proposed all-party meeting on the impact of El Niño in Telangana. That meeting would give political parties a common set of findings on which to discuss the state’s response, although the date and format of the meeting have not been announced in the available report.
For residents, the assessment process is significant because its findings will cover areas directly connected to daily urban and rural security: groundwater availability, agricultural conditions and drinking water supply. The review also brings together departments with different operational responsibilities, including revenue administration, local governance and water management.
The Chief Secretary’s direction follows an official review of the situation, but no immediate relief measures, financial package or district-wise action plan was announced in the report. The next stated milestone is the preparation of the comprehensive drought assessment by October-end, after which it is expected to provide the basis for the proposed all-party discussion.
