Korba Sweet Shop Faces Licence Suspension After Toilet Utensil Video

A sweet shop in Korba’s Niharika area faces possible suspension of its food licence after a video appeared to show employees washing utensils on a toilet floor, prompting an inspection and an improvement notice from the food safety department on October 6.

The outlet, New Delhi Sweets, came under scrutiny after a customer-recorded video circulated on social media. The footage showed staff washing utensils inside the toilet, according to the report. Food safety officials subsequently inspected the establishment following the video’s circulation.

Food safety officer Sangharsh Kumar Mishra described the practice as unhygienic and a violation of food safety norms. During the inspection, the operator attributed the use of the toilet to a disruption in the water supply and said utensils had been washed there as an emergency measure.

The department directed the establishment to correct its arrangements within two to three days. Officials warned that failure to address the hygiene deficiencies could lead to suspension of the shop’s food licence.

The incident places water availability and basic sanitation arrangements at the centre of the regulatory response. While the operator cited a water-supply disruption, the inspection identified the washing of utensils inside a toilet as unacceptable under food safety requirements. The notice gives the outlet a short period to restore compliant arrangements before further action is considered.

For customers, the inspection and notice establish an immediate enforcement response, but the report does not state whether the shop was ordered to close temporarily or whether any food samples were collected. It also does not provide details of the duration of the water disruption or whether the outlet had an alternative washing facility.

The next step is for New Delhi Sweets to improve its water and utensil-washing arrangements within the department’s two-to-three-day deadline. The food safety department has indicated that the licence could be suspended if the deficiencies are not addressed.
