Indian Railways is on the cusp of a significant upgrade with the forthcoming introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper trains. Scheduled for dispatch from Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) in Bengaluru on September 20, these sleeper coaches mark a notable expansion in the Vande Bharat series, which has previously only offered seating options.
Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan confirmed the dispatch date and announced that the inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper train is expected to commence operations by December 2024. Manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in collaboration with BEML, the new Vande Bharat sleeper trains promise to enhance passenger comfort significantly. This latest iteration of the Vande Bharat series will feature a host of upgrades, including wider berths, improved interior lighting, and more spacious toilets, addressing the demand for a more comfortable overnight travel experience on high-speed trains.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will be equipped with several state-of-the-art features. Each train will consist of 16 coaches, accommodating a total of 823 berths. This includes 11 3AC coaches with 611 berths, 4 2AC coaches with 188 berths, and 1 1AC coach with 24 berths. The trains will operate at a maximum speed of 160 kmph, with testing speeds reaching up to 180 kmph. In addition to enhanced comfort with reading lamps, charging outlets, and snack tables, the trains will incorporate advanced safety features, including the Kavach collision avoidance system and durable stainless steel car bodies. Safety measures also include GFRP interior panels and fire safety compliance with EN 45545 standards, along with automatic doors for added convenience.
