The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Mumbai, bringing the 2026 monsoon season in the city to an end while hot and humid conditions are expected to continue in parts of the city and suburbs.
Sushma Nair, Scientist E at the IMD, said on Saturday that the monsoon had withdrawn from parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, on October 3, 2026. The announcement follows the IMD’s assessment that conditions are also favourable for the monsoon to withdraw from more parts of the state and neighbouring regions.
The IMD said the southwest monsoon is likely to withdraw from most parts of Vidarbha, some parts of Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra, as well as parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and North Interior Karnataka over the next two to three days. Rainfall over Vidarbha has remained isolated and very light, indicating weak monsoon activity in the region.
The district-wise forecast issued by the weather department indicates dry conditions across all 11 districts of Vidarbha from October 3 to October 7. The districts listed are Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, Buldhana and Washim. Dry conditions are expected to continue through October 9.
The IMD does not expect any major change in maximum temperatures across Vidarbha over the next seven days, although temperatures in the region are already above normal. Amravati recorded Vidarbha’s highest maximum temperature in October so far at 37.2 degrees Celsius, while Washim recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 19 degrees Celsius.
Mumbai is expected to experience mainly clear skies, with hot and humid conditions in isolated pockets. The city is forecast to record a maximum temperature of around 35 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. The change in weather conditions will also mark a shift from the rainfall-related advisories and flood preparedness that typically accompany the southwest monsoon in the city.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has forecast a high tide in Mumbai at 4:04 pm on October 3, with waves reaching 3.25 metres. A low tide is expected at 10:15 pm, measuring 1.30 metres. On October 4, the next high tide is forecast at 5:49 am, with waves reaching 3.59 metres, followed by a low tide at 12:22 pm measuring 2.28 metres.
The IMD’s immediate forecast points to dry weather in Mumbai and continued heat and humidity, while further withdrawal of the monsoon is expected across parts of Maharashtra and other states over the next few days.
