EV Registrations in India Hit Record 3.3 Lakh in September

EV registrations in India reached a record 3.3 lakh units in September, marking the fourth consecutive month above the three-lakh threshold and signalling sustained growth in electric mobility across vehicle segments. The final figure could rise slightly because of the usual delay in updating all registrations on the Vahan dashboard, according to a report by the Times of India.

Electric two-wheelers accounted for the largest share of the monthly registrations, reaching a new high of 2.07 lakh units. The segment recorded significant year-on-year growth, with several major manufacturers reporting sharp increases in volumes.

TVS Motor more than doubled its year-on-year volumes to about 54,000 units, recovering to above the 50,000-unit mark after falling below it in August. Bajaj also more than doubled its volumes, reaching approximately 48,400 units. Ather recorded around 30,500 units in September, compared with 19,620 units in the same month last year.

Hero, Ola and Greaves recorded sales of more than 24,300 units, 13,450 units and 9,300 units, respectively. The figures indicate that electric two-wheelers remain the main driver of EV adoption, particularly in a market where two-wheelers are central to daily commuting and last-mile travel.

Electric passenger vehicles also reached a monthly record, with sales of around 36,000 units. That was almost double the volume recorded in September 2025, despite the higher upfront cost of electric cars compared with conventional vehicles.

Tata remained the leading manufacturer in the electric passenger vehicle segment, recording about 14,712 units in September, up from 7,340 units in the same month last year. Mahindra ranked second with 7,742 units, compared with 3,783 units a year earlier. Its lead over JSW MG Motor, which sold 5,226 units, widened during the month.

VinFast recorded 2,960 electric passenger vehicle registrations in September, compared with six units in September 2025. The sharp increase follows the company’s entry into India’s electric car market, although the supplied report does not provide details on the models or locations contributing to its registrations.

Electric three-wheeler sales also recovered in September, crossing 86,000 units. The figure was higher than the approximately 80,000 units registered in August but below the 88,315 units recorded in July. Compared with September 2025, however, three-wheeler registrations rose from 61,434 units.

The broad-based increase places pressure on cities and transport authorities to keep pace with the changing vehicle mix. Growth in electric two-wheelers, passenger vehicles and three-wheelers affects charging access, parking design, electricity distribution and the management of commercial and last-mile mobility. The report attributes the sustained sales momentum to a wider choice of models, improving charging infrastructure and rising consumer confidence in electric mobility.

The September registration figures will be subject to final updates on the Vahan dashboard as delayed entries are incorporated. The next milestone will be whether monthly EV registrations remain above the three-lakh mark for a fifth consecutive month.
