Bengaluru’s proposed rotary flyover connecting Maruthi Seva Nagar, SMVT Baiyappanahalli Railway Station, Kammanahalli and Banaswadi has moved closer to implementation after Bengaluru North City Corporation Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar directed officials to expedite the land acquisition required for the project.
Kumar issued the direction during an inspection of areas around Banaswadi on Monday. According to a statement from the Bengaluru North City Corporation, the project will take off once the required land has been acquired.
The proposed connection covers a busy section of east Bengaluru, linking residential areas with SMVT Baiyappanahalli Railway Station and major roads serving Kammanahalli and Banaswadi. The civic direction places land acquisition, rather than construction activity, as the immediate administrative step before the flyover can proceed.
During the inspection, Kumar also reviewed the underpass near Charles School and observed that it currently allows only two-wheelers to pass. He directed officials to discuss widening the underpass with local MLA KJ George and coordinate with K-RIDE to facilitate the work.
The direction brings multiple agencies into the proposed widening exercise. While the BNCC is responsible for coordinating civic-level action in the area, the involvement of K-RIDE indicates that the railway-related interface will need to be addressed before the underpass can be expanded. The statement did not provide a cost estimate, construction schedule or proposed completion date for either the flyover or the widening work.
Kumar’s inspection also covered Mosque Road Junction in Pulakeshinagar, where he reviewed street-cleaning arrangements. Officials were instructed to prepare a micro-plan by September 29, collect the necessary details and ensure regular follow-up for cleaning operations, the BNCC said.
The commissioner further directed officials to expedite drain works in the Hutchins Road and Wheeler Extension Road areas. These works were reviewed alongside the transport projects, placing road connectivity, drainage and street maintenance within the same set of departmental instructions.
The BNCC statement said Kumar asked officials to regularly review works being undertaken by the corporation and other departments, assign timelines and ensure that projects are completed on schedule. The immediate milestones identified by the civic body are the preparation of the cleaning micro-plan, coordination on the underpass widening and acceleration of land acquisition for the rotary flyover.
