Delhi Unauthorised Colonies Get Rs 214 Crore Civic Works Push

The Delhi government has laid the foundation stones for 53 infrastructure projects worth Rs 214.12 crore across unauthorised colonies in Kirari, Bawana, Mundka, Narela and Nangloi Jat, with the works expected to benefit around 1.75 lakh residents.

The projects focus on roads, lanes and drainage infrastructure across 27 unauthorised colonies. According to details released at the foundation-laying programme, 1,062 roads and lanes will be developed, covering around 89.82 km of road network and 147.69 km of drainage network. The government said the works are intended to improve local connectivity and address waterlogging in areas that have faced infrastructure deficiencies for a long time.

Kirari will receive the largest share of the package. The constituency has been allocated 27 works across 14 unauthorised colonies at a cost of Rs 105.51 crore. These projects cover 640 roads and lanes, involving 50.71 km of roads and 101.42 km of drainage network.

Bawana will receive nine works worth Rs 38.83 crore, while five projects worth Rs 22.05 crore have been earmarked for Mundka. Narela has been allocated four projects costing Rs 14.48 crore, and Nangloi Jat will receive eight works worth Rs 33.25 crore.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government was focusing on areas that had faced infrastructure-related problems for an extended period. “The Delhi Government’s objective is to strengthen basic civic amenities in every part of the city,” she said at the event.

Gupta described roads, drains, sewerage and drainage as “basic rights of every citizen” and said development would be taken to “every lane and every area of Delhi”. The emphasis on local roads and drainage places the package beyond large transport infrastructure, targeting the neighbourhood-level systems that determine access, movement and monsoon resilience in densely settled colonies.

Public Works and Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the development programme would not remain limited to major roads. “The pace of development will not remain confined to the main roads, but will reach every lane and every household in unauthorised colonies,” he said.

The project allocations also highlight the uneven distribution of the proposed works. Kirari accounts for nearly half of the total financial allocation and more than half of the road and drainage lengths listed in the announcement. The scale reflects the infrastructure burden in large unauthorised settlements, where narrow lanes, incomplete civic networks and drainage gaps can affect daily mobility and increase the risk of waterlogging.

Social Welfare Minister Ravindra Indraj Singh said there would be no discrimination in development works or budget allocation among Assembly constituencies. He said Rs 105 crore had been made available for development works in Kirari.

The foundation-laying programme was organised under the Delhi government’s Seva Sankalp campaign. The Chief Minister also listened to the 138th episode of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat with citizens and public representatives. The next implementation milestones, including construction schedules and completion timelines for the 53 projects, were not specified in the source announcement.
