Kalyan-Taloja Metro Line 12 Crosses 53% Work, May 2028 Target Set

The Kalyan-Taloja Metro Line 12 has completed 53.87% of its construction, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) planning to complete the 23.576-km elevated corridor and open it to passengers by May 2028.

The line is being developed to provide a faster connection between Kalyan-Dombivli and Navi Mumbai. According to information attributed to MMRDA sources, construction began in March 2024 and the corridor has reached more than half of its planned work within approximately two and a half years.

Metro Line 12 will have 19 stations between Kalyan and Amandoot in Taloja. The planned stations are Kalyan, APMC Kalyan, Ganesh Nagar, Pisavli Gaon, Golavali, Dombivli MIDC, Sagaon, Sonarpada, Manpada, Hedutane, Kolegaon, Nilje Gaon, Vadavli (Kh.), Bale, Vakhale, Turbhe, Pisarve Depot, Pisarve and Amandoot.

The corridor is being developed as an extension of Metro Line 5, the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan route, towards Navi Mumbai. Once operational, the line is expected to reduce the travel time between Kalyan and Taloja by about 45 minutes, according to the report. At Amandoot, it is planned to connect with the Navi Mumbai Metro network, creating a direct interchange between the Kalyan-Dombivli area and Navi Mumbai.

MMRDA sources attributed the pace of construction partly to the early resolution of the corridor’s car depot requirement. A site of approximately 45 hectares was identified and acquired at Nilje-Niljepada before construction began, allowing the depot issue to be addressed ahead of the main works. Depot-related land and planning issues have delayed the completion of several metro projects, but Metro Line 12 began construction after this requirement had been settled, the report said.

The construction contract for the corridor was awarded to Gawar Construction Limited, which began work in 2024 following the foundation ceremony held in March that year. MMRDA is now planning to accelerate the remaining works and meet the May 2028 commissioning target.

The corridor’s proposed connection with Navi Mumbai Metro is intended to improve movement between two major urban areas that are currently linked through road-based routes. For residents of Kalyan-Dombivli and Taloja, the project’s eventual benefit will depend on the completion of the elevated infrastructure, stations, depot and network integration before passenger services begin. MMRDA’s next stated milestone is to complete the remaining construction and place the line into service by May 2028.
