Kolkata is likely to receive more than 50 mm of rain on Thursday, 24 September, as a depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a deep depression and cross the north Andhra Pradesh–South Odisha coast, according to weather officials quoted by The Statesman.
The system was around 200 km southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha and 290 km east of Visakhapatnam at about 11.30 am on Tuesday, after moving closer to the eastern coast. Its movement slowed during the day to about 8 kmph, compared with an earlier speed of 18 kmph.
An official at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore said the system was expected to intensify into a deep depression by Tuesday night. It was forecast to cross the coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur from the night of 23 September to the early hours of 24 September.
The weather system is expected to have its greatest impact on Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal on 24 September. In Kolkata, rainfall is likely to remain below 64 mm but could exceed 50 mm, placing the city towards the higher end of the moderate rainfall category. Rainfall below 64 mm is classified as moderate, while amounts above that threshold fall under the heavy rainfall category, according to the weather department official quoted in the report.
Kolkata has not been issued a coloured rainfall warning, unlike some coastal areas. However, a yellow warning has been issued for thunderstorm activity and lightning in the city for Thursday. The warning is relevant to commuters, street vendors, construction workers and residents in areas exposed to open spaces or temporary structures during storm activity.
The adjoining districts are expected to see stronger impacts. South 24 Parganas and Howrah may receive heavy rainfall, while East Midnapore, West Midnapore and Jhargram could receive very heavy rainfall. These conditions may affect road movement, local drainage and connections between Kolkata and neighbouring districts, although the supplied forecast does not specify particular road closures or transport disruptions.
