In a move designed to accommodate the anticipated surge in commuters for Independence Day celebrations, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced a significant adjustment to its service hours. On August 15, metro services in the national capital will commence at an earlier time of 4 am, catering to the influx of attendees heading to the Independence Day ceremony.
The decision to initiate metro services earlier is aimed at facilitating smooth and timely travel for those attending the national celebration. According to DMRC, this early start will apply to all metro lines from their terminal stations. From 4 am to 6 am, trains will operate at a 15-minute interval, after which the regular schedule will resume for the remainder of the day. In addition to the early start, special provisions have been made for individuals holding invitation cards issued by the Defence Ministry for the Independence Day event. These cardholders will benefit from enhanced travel privileges, including the ability to travel free of charge to and from metro stations closest to the ceremony venue. The designated stations include Lal Quila, Jama Masjid, and Chandni Chowk.
To access these benefits, passengers must present their invitation card along with a valid government-issued photo ID at the metro stations. The special travel arrangements are limited to the aforementioned stations, and the same invitation card will be required for return journeys from these locations. To ensure passengers are aware of these provisions, regular announcements will be made on board trains. The Defence Ministry has agreed to reimburse the cost of these special travel arrangements to DMRC, underlining the collaboration between the two bodies to facilitate smooth and efficient transport for the Independence Day festivities. This adjustment in metro services underscores DMRC’s commitment to supporting large-scale public events and ensuring that Delhi’s residents and visitors can participate in the Independence Day celebrations with ease.
