Telangana Rainfall Warning: Heavy Rain Threatens 27 Districts

Telangana is set to face heavy to very heavy rain from September 20 to 27, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, warning of intense spells across Hyderabad and several other districts after a prolonged lull in monsoon activity.

The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall measuring between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm for September 20 to 27 in 27 districts, including Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Vikarabad, Medak, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Warangal and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri. The warning also covers Bhadradri Kothagudem, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Jogulamba Gadwal, Kamareddy, Khammam, Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mahabubabad, Mahabubnagar, Mancherial, Mulugu, Nagarkurnool, Narayanpet, Peddapalli, Siddipet and Wanaparthy.

A more intense rainfall warning, covering 64.4 mm to 204.4 mm, has been issued for September 23 to 26 in 20 districts. These include Adilabad, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Hanumakonda, Jagtial, Jangaon, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Kamareddy, Karimnagar, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Mancherial, Mulugu, Nalgonda, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, Rajanna Sircilla, Suryapet and Warangal.

The forecast places Hyderabad within the wider period of heavy rainfall, although the city is not included in the separate September 23 to 26 heavy-to-very-heavy rainfall list. The warning is significant for urban areas because intense rain can quickly affect road traffic, low-lying locations, storm-water drainage and daily travel, particularly when rainfall is concentrated over a short period.

The IMD has also warned of heavy thunderstorms accompanied by squally winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph between September 24 and 26. This warning applies to the same group of 20 districts identified for the higher rainfall range, including Adilabad, Karimnagar, Khammam, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, Suryapet and Warangal.

The forecast follows what the IMD Hyderabad described as weeks of subdued monsoon activity in Telangana. The change in rainfall conditions is expected to affect both urban and rural districts, with the heaviest warning period falling between September 23 and 26. The supplied IMD warning does not specify district-level rainfall impacts, road closures or instructions for residents.

The weather agency’s warning gives district administrations and civic authorities a defined period for monitoring rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds. The next operational developments will depend on subsequent IMD updates and local advisories issued by district and municipal authorities through September 27.
