Mumbai’s Food and Drug Administration has suspended the food licence of Colaba’s Olympia Coffee House with immediate effect after an inspection found a urinal inside its food storage area, along with cockroaches, flies and unhygienic food preparation practices.
The action followed a consumer complaint and was reported by the Maharashtra FDA as part of a wider festive-season food safety campaign. During the suspension, Olympia Coffee House has been directed to stop purchasing, preparing, storing, selling and distributing food.
FDA officials said the inspection identified multiple hygiene violations at the establishment. The presence of a urinal within an area used for food storage was among the findings that led to the immediate suspension of its licence. The inspection also recorded an infestation of cockroaches and flies.
The enforcement action was not limited to the iconic Colaba establishment. The licences of seven other food establishments were also suspended for failing to meet food safety requirements. These included Vishwas Sweets and Snacks in Ghatkopar West, A-1 General & Dry Fruits, Milan Punjab in Worli and Sadguru Sweets in Malad East.
A Blinkit warehouse in Chembur was also among the establishments facing suspension after failing hygiene standards. The list further included a canteen within Nair Hospital, where officials cited “serious hygiene and safety breaches affecting patient and public health.” The inclusion of a hospital food facility places the enforcement action beyond routine restaurant regulation, linking food handling standards directly to institutional public health.
The FDA’s action also included seizures of milk and dairy products worth Rs 7,38,230 across the state. The seizures were carried out as part of the festive-season campaign, during which food safety authorities were checking establishments and products for compliance with hygiene and safety requirements.
For Olympia Coffee House, the suspension means that all activities connected with food must stop during the specified period. The FDA statement did not provide details in the supplied report on the duration of the suspension, the corrective measures required for restoration of the licence or whether the establishment has sought a review of the order.
