Proposed Flyover to Ease Delhi-Gurgaon Traffic

A proposal has emerged from a recent meeting between the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) officials. The plan involves constructing a 5-kilometre flyover along the Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road, intended to streamline traffic flow towards the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).

The proposed flyover would stretch from Atul Kataria Chowk in Gurugram to Samalka in Delhi, serving as a dedicated elevated corridor for airport-bound vehicles. This segregation from other traffic is expected to significantly reduce congestion on this frequently congested road, thereby enhancing travel efficiency for both daily commuters and air travellers. Currently, it takes approximately one hour to traverse the distance between Atul Kataria Chowk and IGI Airport during peak traffic hours. However, the new flyover could potentially cut this travel time to just 15 minutes, offering a considerable improvement in commuter experience.

While discussions are still in the preliminary stages, with a final decision yet to be made, the proposal marks an essential step towards addressing the persistent traffic woes on this critical route. A senior GMDA official remarked, “We had preliminary discussions earlier this week on how we can improve traffic flow between Gurgaon and the airport. Since NH-8 is the primary route and witnesses heavy traffic flow, there is a need to improve other connecting routes. The agency has submitted its recommendations, and we have also shared our suggestions so that the finer details can be ironed out and a decision made. Many things need to be considered before we can go ahead with the plan — RRTS and Gurugram metro corridors will come up in the vicinity, and feedback from other stakeholders will also have to be taken into consideration.”

The planned infrastructure, a six-lane flyover, aims to provide a dedicated route for airport traffic, thereby easing the overall burden on the Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road. Presently, the road suffers from slow traffic movement due to several factors, including the lack of additional link roads to the Dwarka Expressway. The study conducted by DIAL highlighted these issues, suggesting the development of sub-arterial roads to enhance connectivity. Furthermore, it proposed a separate four-lane flyover at Rezang La Chowk, spanning 3.2 kilometres, as part of the broader strategy to mitigate traffic congestion.

In addition to the flyover proposal, the study outlined short, mid, and long-term plans to address the traffic bottlenecks between Gurgaon and IGIA. One of the key recommendations was to improve the road geometry from Ambience Mall to Shankar Vihar, alongside the realignment of lanes near the MCD Toll Plaza. These measures are expected to alleviate severe delays experienced during peak hours on the heavily trafficked NH-8 corridor. The proposed flyover and other infrastructure enhancements are part of a broader effort to create a more efficient and less congested transportation network in the region. As the discussions progress, stakeholders remain focused on ensuring that the final plan is comprehensive, taking into account various urban development projects and stakeholder feedback. This initiative underscores the importance of proactive planning in addressing the challenges of urban mobility and infrastructure development.
