A shop explosion in Sanpada, Navi Mumbai, seriously injured two people and damaged six shops on Tuesday morning, while the force of the blast also shattered windows at a hospital in a building opposite the affected commercial premises, according to the Vashi fire department.
The explosion occurred at around 6 a.m. in Shop No. 1 of Pratik Cooperative Housing Society, Plot No. 4, Sector 1, Sanpada. The premises are part of a cluster of shops located near Abhimanyu Cooperative Housing Society on Plot No. 3 in the same sector.
The two injured people were identified as Arun Yadav, 26, and Arjun Yadav, 46. Both suffered serious injuries and were admitted to Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s Vashi Hospital for treatment.
The blast caused extensive damage to six shops in the area. The impact was also felt beyond the building housing the affected shop, with windows of a hospital located opposite the site breaking, the fire department said.
Initial discussion at the site reportedly focused on the possibility of a cooking-gas cylinder explosion inside the food shop. However, three cylinders present in the shop appeared to be intact, leaving the exact cause of the blast unconfirmed. The police are gathering further information to establish what triggered the incident.
The incident highlights the immediate safety risks that can arise in mixed-use urban buildings where commercial food outlets operate close to housing societies, medical facilities and other occupied premises. In this case, the damage extended across multiple shops and affected a building opposite the blast site, although the available information does not establish whether the explosion was caused by a cylinder, equipment failure, a gas leak or another source.
Fire department personnel responded to the site and assessed the damage, while the injured were moved to the municipal hospital. The condition of the two injured people was described as serious in the initial report.
Further findings from the police investigation and the fire department’s assessment are expected to determine the cause of the explosion and clarify whether any additional safety violations or hazards were present at the commercial premises. Authorities had not confirmed the final cause at the time of the report.
