A Sanpada shop explosion seriously injured two people and damaged six shops in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday morning, while the force of the blast shattered windowpanes at a hospital across the road, according to the Navi Mumbai fire department.
The explosion occurred at around 6 am inside Shop No. 1 in Pratik Cooperative Housing Society, Plot No. 4, Sector 1, Sanpada. The affected commercial premises are located near Abhimanyu Cooperative Housing Society, Plot No. 3, which also has three shops, according to the report.
Arun Yadav, 26, and Arjun Yadav, 46, sustained serious injuries in the incident. Both were taken to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s Vashi Hospital for treatment.
The blast caused extensive damage to six shops in the surrounding commercial premises. The impact was also felt at the hospital located opposite the building, where windowpanes were broken, fire department officials said.
There was initial speculation that the explosion may have involved a gas cylinder at the food shop. However, the three cylinders reportedly found at the premises appeared to be intact after the incident. Fire department officer Purushottam Jadhav said the exact cause of the blast had not yet been established.
Police are collecting further information to determine what caused the explosion. The incident has brought attention to the safety risks associated with food businesses operating in mixed-use commercial buildings, but no official conclusion on the cause had been announced at the time of the report.
The injured men remain under treatment at Vashi Hospital, while police and fire officials continue their inquiry into the circumstances of the Sanpada explosion.
