The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh on Tuesday, with the wider weather system expected to remain active across several parts of India over the next few days.
The IMD has predicted isolated heavy rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, as well as Punjab and parts of east Rajasthan. Delhi-NCR may also experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, while fairly widespread to widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is forecast over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi and Punjab from September 16 to 17.
The forecast places Delhi’s rain risk within a wider spell affecting north, central, eastern, northeastern, western and southern India. The IMD has issued a warning of very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Konkan and Goa, the Gujarat region, and Saurashtra and Kutch. Gujarat, Konkan and Goa and Saurashtra and Kutch are expected to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall on Tuesday, with thunderstorms and lightning possible in parts of Gujarat and Saurashtra and Kutch.
Odisha is also likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall on Tuesday, with heavy rain expected to continue through September 17. The state is forecast to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning. Bihar, Jharkhand, West Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe are among the other regions where heavy rain has been forecast in specific areas.
In north India, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad are likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. East Rajasthan may see isolated heavy rain, while west Madhya Pradesh is also likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall. Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha are expected to see fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning in parts of central India.
The forecast extends to the east and northeast, where Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and the other northeastern states are also likely to remain wet. Isolated heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are possible in Arunachal Pradesh, while Assam and Meghalaya may receive heavy rain along with thunderstorms and lightning.
Southern states are expected to see rain across Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and North Interior Karnataka. Kerala and Mahe are likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, while isolated heavy rain is possible over Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds may affect parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Telangana.
The IMD said rainfall is expected to remain active across several parts of the country over the next few days. For Delhi-NCR, the next forecast period will determine the intensity and spread of rain across the capital region as the Tuesday warning and the September 16-17 outlook take effect.
