Students at a government post-matriculation hostel in Kanakapura raised complaints about missing bedsheets, bedbug infestation and poor bus access during a night inspection by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, prompting instructions for the district administration to address the issues immediately.
Shivakumar visited the Backward Classes Welfare Department’s post-matriculation boys’ hostel near the Housing Board area in Kanakapura and had a meal with the students, according to a report by Prajavani. He then asked them about their welfare and the facilities available at the hostel.
During the interaction, students said they had not yet received bedsheets. They also complained that bedbugs were present in the hostel and that medicines or treatment to control the infestation had not been provided. The complaints point to gaps in basic residential services at a facility intended to support students pursuing education after secondary school.
The students also told the chief minister that buses were not stopping near the hostel. As a result, they said, they had to walk to their colleges. The transport complaint links the functioning of the hostel to access beyond its premises, since students depend on safe and practical connectivity to reach educational institutions.
Shivakumar questioned Ramanagara Deputy Commissioner Yashwant V. Gurukar and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Anmol Jain about why the students had not received the promised facilities and why the issues had been delayed. He subsequently directed the officials to examine the complaints immediately and resolve them.
The reported exchange places responsibility for the hostel’s basic services with the district administration and the departments overseeing the facility. The complaints cover both hostel operations—such as bedding and pest control—and neighbourhood-level connectivity, including the availability of bus stops close to the premises.
The visit took place during Shivakumar’s visit to his native place for the Gowri-Ganesha festival, when he also visits his father’s memorial, his family deity’s temple and other locations, according to the report. The district administration’s follow-up on the students’ complaints is the next official step reported after the inspection.
