Bengal dengue cases have crossed 5,000 this year, with Murshidabad recording the highest number of infections, according to a state health department bulletin covering data up to September 11. The state recorded 5,002 positive cases from 6,826 tests, and the case count has more than doubled since August 6.
Murshidabad accounted for 1,072 infections, making it the worst-affected district in the bulletin. Kolkata recorded more than 500 cases, while North 24 Parganas reported 450 and Nadia more than 400. Malda recorded around 400 cases and South 24 Parganas reported 366 infections.
Howrah and Hooghly each recorded 325 cases. Purba Bardhaman reported 256 cases, followed by Paschim Bardhaman with 154. Purba Medinipur recorded 126 cases, Paschim Medinipur 104 and Jhargram 54, according to the district-wise figures cited in the bulletin.
The latest figures mark a steep rise over the previous update. Bengal had recorded 2,410 dengue cases as of August 6. By September 11, the total had risen to 5,002, an increase of 2,592 cases in roughly five weeks.
The figures cover the period from August 6 to September 11 and represent people who tested positive for the vector-borne disease. The bulletin also reported that 6,826 dengue tests had been conducted across the state during the period covered by the latest data.
The district distribution shows that the outbreak is not limited to Kolkata. Murshidabad’s tally was more than double the figure reported for any other named district, while several districts across south and central Bengal also reported substantial case loads. The health department bulletin is the latest official data cited in the report.
The next update from the state health department will establish whether the upward trend continues and how the district-wise distribution changes after September 11.
