Perambur is set to receive new sports infrastructure worth ₹62.82 lakh, with tenders floated for a multipurpose facility at Mayor Krishnamurthy Nagar and sports upgrades at Dr Ambedkar Government Arts College in north Chennai.
The projects are being taken up under constituency development funds. The larger of the two works, estimated at ₹41.98 lakh, will create a multipurpose sports facility at Mayor Krishnamurthy Nagar. Greater Chennai Corporation officials said the facility will include a four-step gallery with seating for around 2,000 people, a stage and provisions for lighting and sound equipment.
The site already has a football ground. The project will add a volleyball court, according to the details reported by Times of India – Chennai. The proposed gallery and supporting infrastructure are expected to provide space for sporting events and related public activities in the locality.
A second project, valued at ₹20.84 lakh, has been proposed at Dr Ambedkar Government Arts College. It will include grounds for kabaddi, basketball and cricket, along with sports equipment. The work will be carried out in coordination with the Public Works Department because the land belongs to the department, a Greater Chennai Corporation official said.
Work on both facilities is scheduled to begin after the bids are finalised on September 18. The tender process will determine the immediate implementation timeline for the projects and the start of construction activity at the two locations.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of a wider ₹1,013 crore development plan announced for Perambur in July. That plan included several proposed youth and sports infrastructure projects, although the details available for the current tenders relate specifically to the two facilities at Mayor Krishnamurthy Nagar and Dr Ambedkar Government Arts College.
V Siva, north Chennai district secretary of TVK and chairperson of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board, said the area needed greater focus on youth and that available land had been underused. He also said other development work was in the pipeline, including facilities for gig workers and improvements to local infrastructure.
Residents said accessible sports spaces could help young people train and participate in sporting activities in an area where such facilities are limited. Vyasarpadi resident N Shaktivel said existing sports facilities at Dr Ambedkar Government Arts College were inadequate and described them as being available only in name. He also said the college required improvements to basic facilities, including classrooms and toilets.
Shaktivel said the locality had young people with talent in kabaddi and boxing and welcomed the proposed sports facilities. The next formal milestone is the finalisation of bids on September 18, after which work on the two projects is expected to begin.
