The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has demolished 67 properties and sealed nine others in the two days since enforcement was intensified after the collapse of a five-storey paying guest accommodation in Satya Niketan that killed seven people, according to officials cited by Live Hindustan – NCR.
The action targets unsafe buildings, unauthorised construction and properties allegedly violating building regulations. The civic body carried out intensified enforcement on September 11 and 12, as inspections of structures used for paying guest accommodation and other forms of residential-commercial activity continued across the city.
MCD officials had earlier issued show-cause notices to 35 properties and ordered the demolition of four properties. The latest action included the demolition of dangerous structures in Nehru Vihar and Gandhi Vihar. In Rohini Sector 3, an unauthorised reinforced concrete panel built above a rooftop room was removed. A section installed to strengthen the structure was cut using a gas cutter, officials said.
The enforcement drive covers multiple MCD zones. Earlier in the week, demolition action was taken in Najafgarh and against a four-storey building in Shahdara North. Six properties were acted against in Rohini, three in Narela, three in Civil Lines and six in Shahdara North, according to the report. Nine sealing actions were also carried out, including against two large warehouses in Karol Bagh. A hotel in the West Zone was sealed as well.
The civic body has also been surveying buildings used as PG facilities. More than 1,200 PG buildings were surveyed during the week. At least three were found to be dangerous, while 39 required minor repairs and nine required major repairs, officials said. MCD separately identified 26 structures built above the G+4 level using frames, citing concerns that they could become unsafe.
The inspections follow the collapse of the Satya Niketan PG building and earlier incidents in Saket and Malviya Nagar that led MCD to intensify action against unauthorised construction and misuse of premises. The campaign is also linked to a wider survey of commercial use in residential areas. Over three months, MCD surveyed nearly 300,000 properties across 404 colonies and 168 wards to identify such activity.
MCD data cited in the report shows that between June 1 and September 3, 2026, the civic body demolished 983 properties and sealed 464. It issued 1,516 show-cause notices for unauthorised construction, 708 sealing notices and 726 demolition orders during the same period.
The current action has covered areas including Satbari, Sainik Farms, Bhajanpura, Shahdara, Dwarka, Kakrola, Tihar village, Rajouri Garden Extension, Paschim Vihar and Jamia Nagar. The inspections and enforcement measures are expected to continue as MCD assesses the safety and regulatory status of buildings used for PG accommodation and other unauthorised purposes.
