Delhi water supply in parts of Old Delhi may be affected after a water pipeline burst at Ajmeri Gate on Saturday, causing extensive waterlogging on the road leading towards Kamla Market and disrupting movement in the area.
The incident was reported at Ajmeri Gate, where a large volume of water spread across the road after the pipeline broke. The flooding affected pedestrians and other road users travelling between Ajmeri Gate and Kamla Market, according to Live Hindustan – NCR.
The continuing flow from the damaged pipeline has raised the possibility of a wider impact on water supply in parts of Old Delhi. However, the specific localities that could face disruption and the likely duration of any interruption had not been detailed in the report.
The Delhi Jal Board has taken cognisance of the complaint and assured that steps would be taken to repair the damaged pipeline and improve the situation. The water utility said the problem had been noted and that a timely resolution would be ensured.
The incident highlights how a failure in underground water infrastructure can quickly affect both essential services and surface mobility in a dense, high-use part of the capital. The Ajmeri Gate–Kamla Market route serves pedestrians and vehicles moving through one of the older parts of central Delhi, where road space is already constrained.
Traffic conditions across several parts of Delhi were also affected on Saturday by rain, vehicle breakdowns and the movement of VVIP convoys linked to the BRICS summit. Roads around Barapulla Flyover, Ring Road, Ashram Flyover, Sarai Kale Khan and Bhikaji Cama Place experienced disruption, with additional pressure on alternative routes.
A fallen tree branch on the loop of the AIIMS Flyover reportedly slowed traffic for an extended period and affected vehicles travelling towards Dhaula Kuan. Traffic restrictions were also imposed temporarily on routes used by official convoys, including stretches near Ring Road and National Highway 9.
The congestion added to movement difficulties around the time of the pipeline failure, although the water-related disruption was concentrated near Ajmeri Gate and the road towards Kamla Market. The immediate civic priority remains restoring the damaged pipeline and clearing water from the affected road.
The Delhi Jal Board’s repair action and any subsequent advisory on affected neighbourhoods will determine whether the incident results in a temporary supply interruption for residents and establishments in Old Delhi.
