Delhi Water Project Revives Wazirabad Network Upgrade
Delhi’s long-pending Wazirabad water supply improvement programme has moved closer to implementation after the Economic Affairs Department’s screening committee gave in-principle approval to an estimated ₹2,574-crore investment. The project targets the distribution network linked to the Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant and is intended to improve reliability across parts of North Delhi. Its revival comes as the capital faces growing pressure to reduce leakage, strengthen last-mile connections and make better use of treated water.
The Delhi Water Project has its roots in the 2013–14 period, when the Delhi Jal Board initiated work under the Delhi Water Supply Improvement Investment Programme with Asian Development Bank support. The original project was approved at about ₹2,243 crore, but implementation and funding problems prevented the planned works from progressing as intended. The current proposal has been revised to around ₹2,574 crore. Delhi’s 2026–27 budget also identifies the Wazirabad distribution improvement project as an ADB-supported initiative covering 10 Assembly constituencies in North Delhi. Rather than focusing only on new pipelines, the programme is designed as a wider network upgrade. Planned interventions include improvements to underground service reservoirs, booster stations, pumping facilities and primary, secondary and tertiary distribution lines. Household connections and water metering are also part of the project framework.
This matters because treatment capacity alone does not guarantee dependable water at the household level. Ageing distribution assets, pressure variations and leakages can reduce the amount of treated water that ultimately reaches consumers. For a city facing a widening gap between demand and available supply, reducing these losses can be as important as adding new production capacity. The project’s procurement process has also begun moving again. The Delhi Jal Board issued an expression of interest in January 2026 for project management consultancy for the ADB-assisted Wazirabad programme, while a related tender process has subsequently progressed through technical and financial evaluation stages. The scale of the proposed investment also places the project within Delhi’s broader water-security challenge.
The 2026–27 budget targets major expansion of transmission and distribution infrastructure while seeking to reduce non-revenue water treated water that is produced but lost before reaching paying users from around 45% to 15%. For residents, the meaningful test will be execution. Better pressure, fewer interruptions and wider formal connections would provide direct benefits, but construction will also need careful traffic, road and neighbourhood management. As Delhi upgrades ageing infrastructure, keeping disruption limited while delivering measurable improvements will be central to whether the Delhi Water Project translates into a more resilient and equitable urban water system.
