The 310-km Nagpur–Mancherial–Warangal–Khammam–Vijayawada Greenfield Highway is expected to open to the public by December 31, 2027, Telangana Roads & Buildings and Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy told the Legislative Council.
The minister was responding to questions from MLCs Pochampally Srinivas Reddy and Prof. Kodandaram. He said the Telangana government would ask the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to provide an exit near Parkal, allowing local residents to access the highway directly.
The highway is planned to connect Telangana with Nagpur in Maharashtra and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. Of its total length, around 280 km falls within Telangana, according to the minister’s statement reported by Deccan Chronicle.
The Mancherial–Warangal section has been divided into construction packages. The Letter of Acceptance for the work was issued on March 31, 2023, and the agreement was signed on May 23, 2023. The project was initially expected to be completed within 730 days, but construction was delayed by land acquisition problems, court cases and other implementation hurdles.
Komatireddy said most land acquisition issues had now been resolved, although land handover was still pending at a few locations. These include stretches of about 1 to 1.3 km and another section measuring 5.7 km, according to the report.
The minister also said farmers would not be disadvantaged by the acquisition process and that compensation would be provided at market rates. Land acquisition is the responsibility of the Telangana government, while construction is being carried out under NHAI supervision. The state government is acting as the nodal agency and coordinating with the highway authority, he said.
The project’s importance was also reviewed by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on May 26, when he stressed the highway’s significance for Telangana’s connectivity with Nagpur. The proposed route is expected to provide a faster road connection across several districts and strengthen links between the state, central Maharashtra and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The revised deadline for completion and opening is December 31, 2027. The next immediate implementation milestones are the handover of the remaining land parcels, resolution of pending legal or site-related obstacles and continued package-wise construction under NHAI supervision.
