Pune Municipal Corporation officials faced questions during the civic body’s general meeting on Thursday over road repairs, funding and infrastructure gaps after a 16-year-old girl died in an accident on the Katraj-Kondhwa road. Mayor Manjusha Nagpure directed the administration to provide a detailed clarification on four issues, but the subsequent response did not address the points she had specifically raised, according to a report by Loksatta – Pune.
The meeting was held at the Hindvi Swarajya hall in the Pune Municipal Corporation’s new building under Nagpure’s chairpersonship. At the beginning of the session, members of the opposition Congress, Nationalist Congress Party and Shiv Sena (Thackeray) raised the fatal accident on the Katraj-Kondhwa road and questioned the administration about the condition and development of the road.
PMC city engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar appeared before the general meeting to provide the administration’s clarification on the issue. Before he began, Nagpure instructed the administration to respond to four specific questions concerning roads and other civic infrastructure in villages that had been incorporated into the municipal corporation.
The mayor asked how much funding would be required to provide roads, footpaths and other essential facilities in the newly incorporated villages. She also sought details of the provision made for these works in the PMC’s current-year budget. The other questions concerned whether it would be possible to construct all the required roads at the same time and how much funding would be needed to repair roads that already exist.
According to the report, Pawaskar delivered a clarification lasting about 45 minutes but did not address the issues raised by the mayor. The administration’s response therefore left unanswered the questions about the scale of the funding requirement, the budget allocation for the current year, the feasibility of completing road construction simultaneously and the cost of repairing existing roads.
The dispute places the Katraj-Kondhwa road within a wider civic administration question involving road safety, infrastructure provision in newly incorporated areas and the allocation of municipal funds. The immediate issue before the general meeting was the death of the 16-year-old following the road accident, while members also sought accountability for the condition and management of the road.
The report does not provide the administration’s figures for the total funds required, the current budget allocation, the number of roads to be constructed or the estimated repair cost. It also does not record a further response from the administration to the mayor’s instructions.
