MUMBAI | September 11, 2026 — The Mumbai suburban district administration has removed encroachments from another six acres of government land in Mankhurd, near the Children’s Aid Society along the Sion-Panvel Highway, taking the total area reclaimed across Mumbai’s suburbs to 53 acres, according to a report by Loksatta.
The latest action targeted a government plot on which 57 illegal commercial units had been built. The structures were demolished during an operation carried out by officials from the suburban district administration, with police security provided by Deputy Commissioner of Police Sameer Sheikh, the report said.
The operation was conducted by the additional district collector for encroachments in the eastern suburbs and the deputy collector of the Chembur division. Suburban Collector Sourabh Katiyar said the Mankhurd action was part of an ongoing campaign to remove long-pending encroachments from government land and restore the administration’s possession of the plots.
Before the latest operation, the administration had reclaimed 14 acres in Mankhurd. The report said that, over the past seven months, officials had removed encroachments from a combined 53 acres of government land in several locations across the Mumbai suburban district.
The reported total includes 20 acres in Mankhurd, 11 acres in the Kurla scrap market area, six acres along the Tata Power transmission line and the main highway, the Shakila Ansari compound in Deonar, two acres at Shankara Vasahat in Chembur, and 14 acres in the Borivali and Andheri talukas. Katiyar said these plots had been taken back into government possession.
The administration has also acted against encroachments on mangrove land near the Juhu-Versova Link Road. According to the report, an individual had occupied the plot after obtaining a court stay order. The area had also contained Goldie Garage, which had operated there for several years. The suburban collector’s office had been unable to remove the structures while the stay was in force, but the buildings were later demolished after follow-up action by Tehsildar Snehalata Swami.
The latest Mankhurd operation comes as the district administration continues its reported drive against unauthorised occupation of government land. Officials have said that the action will continue. The administration’s next steps will involve maintaining possession of the reclaimed plots and proceeding with further encroachment-removal operations across the suburban district.
