Traffic restrictions and diversions have been imposed across parts of New Delhi for three days from September 11 to 13 during the BRICS summit, with motorists advised to use alternative routes and the Metro to reduce delays. The restrictions cover 35 major roads and several junctions around Bharat Mandapam and Pragati Maidan, according to a report citing Delhi Traffic Police guidance.
The affected roads include Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, Tis January Marg, Rajesh Pilot Marg, Subramania Bharati Marg, Mathura Road, Motilal Nehru Marg, Dr Zakir Hussain Marg, Africa Avenue Road, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Barakhamba Road, Tolstoy Marg, Neeti Marg, Panchsheel Marg, Kamal Ataturk Marg, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Road, Press Enclave Road, Lodhi Road and Lala Lajpat Rai Marg.
Traffic diversions will also be managed at 22 locations, including Dr Dinesh Nandini Dalmia Chowk, Ramcharan Agrawal Chowk, Mier Dard Chowk, the Kasturba Gandhi Marg outer circle, the Janpath-Connaught Place intersection, Patel Chowk, the RML Hospital roundabout, Vande Mataram Marg, Dhaula Kuan flyover, Moti Bagh flyover and Brigadier Hoshiar Singh Marg. Traffic may be stopped or redirected depending on security requirements and VIP movement.
The advisory identifies several alternative routes, including Ring Road, BSZ Marg, I.P. Marg, Lodhi Road, the Connaught Place outer circle and Ashoka Road. Vehicles heading towards Lodhi Road, Amrita Sher-Gil Marg, Max Mueller Marg, Maharshi Raman Marg, Archbishop Makarios Marg, Mathura Road, Tilak Marg, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Marg, Shanti Path, Sardar Patel Marg and Bhairon Marg may be diverted or temporarily stopped.
Passengers travelling to New Delhi Railway Station have been advised to consider routes through ISBT Kashmere Gate, Rani Jhansi Road, Panchkuian Road and the Connaught Place outer circle. Alternative routes have also been suggested for people travelling to Old Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations. Airport-bound passengers have been asked to allow additional travel time and use Metro services where possible.
According to the report, Metro services will remain available at all stations, although bus routes may be changed temporarily during VIP movement. Roadside parking will be prohibited within 200 metres of the event venue. Taxis and autorickshaws will be allowed to park only at designated locations, while non-destination commercial vehicles travelling out of Delhi may be denied entry.
Traffic Police has asked commuters to check live traffic updates before starting their journey and follow instructions from personnel deployed on the roads. People have also been advised to report any suspicious object to the nearest police officer. The restrictions are scheduled to remain in place through September 13, subject to security and traffic-management requirements.
