Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure sought a detailed clarification from the municipal administration on road infrastructure and repair funding during the Pune Municipal Corporation’s general body meeting, after members raised the death of a 16-year-old girl in an accident on the Katraj-Kondhwa road.
The meeting was held on Thursday at the Hindvi Swarajya auditorium in the Pune Municipal Corporation’s new building under Nagpure’s chairmanship. Members of the opposition Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Shiv Sena (Thackeray) faction raised the accident and questioned the administration over the condition and development of the road.
Municipal city engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar appeared before the meeting to respond on behalf of the administration. Before the clarification began, Nagpure directed officials to address four specific issues related to roads and civic infrastructure.
The mayor asked the administration to state how much funding would be required to provide roads, footpaths and other essential facilities in the newly merged villages. She also sought details of the provision made for these works in the municipal corporation’s current-year budget.
Nagpure further asked whether it would be possible to construct all the required roads at the same time and how much funding would be needed to repair roads that already exist. The questions placed the municipal corporation’s road-building and maintenance requirements at the centre of the meeting.
According to the report, Pawaskar’s clarification lasted about 45 minutes, but did not address the four points raised by the mayor. The report described the exchange as a failure by the administration to respond directly to the mayor’s instructions.
