Mumbai and neighbouring districts are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the weekend after a prolonged dry spell, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for the city, Thane, Palghar and Raigad.
The weather office expects rain activity to increase from Saturday and continue until Monday morning. According to IMD officials, moderate rainfall is forecast across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad during this period, after which the intensity of showers is expected to decline.
The alert covers the Mumbai Metropolitan Region from Saturday and indicates the possibility of a wet weekend. The forecast comes after limited rainfall in the city in recent weeks. IMD data showed that the Santacruz and Colaba observatories recorded no rainfall between Wednesday and Thursday morning.
Mumbai has received 34 mm of rainfall in September so far, compared with the month’s average of 384 mm, according to the report. The city also recorded a rainfall deficit in August, with the suburban station receiving 44 per cent less rainfall than its actual seasonal average.
Athreya Shetty, an independent weather observer, attributed the renewed rain activity to a low-pressure system off the Odisha coast. Shetty said the system was expected to become well-marked and move westwards over the following days, bringing stronger showers to the region from Saturday night.
“Gradually, the well-marked system will slowly move westwards and result in good showers, starting Saturday night. The intensity of showers can hover between moderate and heavy,” Shetty told The Indian Express. He added that Mumbai could receive between 200 mm and 300 mm of rainfall, although the rainfall was unlikely to be disruptive.
The expected spell may become one of the final heavy phases of the southwest monsoon in Mumbai before the season’s eventual withdrawal, according to meteorologists and weather observers cited in the report. The timing of the withdrawal has not been specified in the supplied report.
The forecast follows a marked shift from the typical pattern of heavy monsoon spells that Mumbai usually experiences during the season. While rainfall had eluded the city since August, the latest alert points to a short-term revival across the wider metropolitan region.
